What will be taught:

OLLB Level One / Instruction to Coaching will ensure that all new coaches have a basic understanding of the game, ensure that the focus is on fun for players, they will work to improve players’ ability, understand the rules, how to set up a team, how to position players, understand baseball basics (hit, run, throw, field, catch), know what is required of coaches on and off the field, of the players, their parents, and how to run practices and games.  Coaches will be informed on the OLLB values regarding respect for players, coaches, and umpires.

Coaches may self-select for participation or convenors at the T-Ball, Coach Pitch, Minor and Major levels will provide a list of new coaches at each level who require certification.  Over time, all coaches will have coaching Level One certification.  Also eligible are new coaches at older age groups who may follow the Level One course as well.  Convenors at those levels will identify new coaches.

Format / duration:

2 hours / indoors

First hour – will be spent on teaching coaches what is required of players to properly hit, run, throw, field, and catch.  Please bring a baseball glove, running shoes, and comfortable clothing.

Second hour – will instruct coaches how to manage a coaching staff and team, plan practices and games, preparing a line-up, understand the rules that are applicable to each level.

Respect for all – within the second hour, coaches will participate in a mandatory discussion on respect for players, coaches, umpires, and parents. Following this session, coaches will attest that they will implement the Respect provisions of the training.

Returning coaches:

OLLB returning coaches are also eligible to receive Level One coaching certificates as well.

New coaches who successfully follow the Level One course will receive an OLLB certificate provided by/signed by the OLLB President, OLLB Vice-President Baseball Operations, and the OLLB instructor.

Next levels of coaching:

OLLB will develop a Level Two Coaching certificate targeted at new and experienced coaches who require a better understanding of baseball strategy.  This coaching certificate is targeted at summer competitive coaches at all levels and for all new coaches in the Major level and above.

OLLB will develop a coaching program both within OLLB and from Baseball Canada so that coaches can receive appropriate certification to coach older age groups in the spring instructional season and for all summer competitive seasons (all levels).

OLLB can assist in providing a revalidation should it be desired/required.
